Install Natural Stone Veneer

Installing natural stone veneer doesn't require the skills of a master mason. The veneer can be used on retaining walls, fireplaces -- both indoors or outdoors, walls, and pillars. Thin stone veneers are made from real stone so they won't warp, crack, fade, or chip. Also, should they chip or crack, nobody will notice because, unlike with fake stone veneer, the color and texture of the stone goes all the way through. Stone veneer is also more easily and quickly applied, because it weighs less and is more easily handled. Thin stone veneer is the best in terms of being long lasting and easy to use when trying to match a design.

The Basics

First, a moisture barrier is required, followed by a frame for the mortar to adhere to, and finally the stone of your choosing. For your veneer to last, you must apply a moisture barrier and a backbone frame.

For installation on plywood, paneling, wall sheeting, wall board, or other porous surfaces:

1) Be sure the wall is covered with a moisture barrier. It should be weather resistant to protect the underlying wood, as well as the back of the stone veneer from moisture damage.

2) (Verify with your local building code) Put on a metal lath, mesh, or sheeting with galvanized nails or staples. This provides a rigid framework for the mortar to grip, and a solid base for the stones to adhere to.

3) Now it is time to add the mortar and stone veneer. Be sure to apply mortar in between each joint.

4) After your mortar has hardened, use a stiff brush and some water to scrape away any mortar that has spilled onto the surface of the stones.

Metal Buildings:

1) Put together a paperbacked 3/8 inch expanded metal lath to a metal cladding supports. Be sure to utilize metal cladding supports. They must be at least 12 to 20 gage. Use 12 x 1-3/4" pancake head super tight screws. Make certain that the screws penetrate no less than 3/8" past the interior surface of the metal, and are installed at least every 12 inches.

2) You should add a scratch coat of mortar that is between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch thick and let it dry for a minimum of 48 hours.

3) Apply the mortar and affix the stones.

4) After allowing the mortar a minimum of 24 hours drying time, remove any stains left by the mortar using water and a stiff brush to clean the face of the stones.
